Fatuous opportunists like Lindsey Graham are at least highlighting a serious problem in talking about the issue of births to illegal aliens. Lefty open-borders opponents of changing the citizenship rules, on the other hand, basically have to deny there’s anything to worry about.
E. J. Dionne, for instance, in today’s column, which is dripping with bogus solicitude for the GOP’s soul, never addresses facts like the finding that 70 percent of the mothers giving birth at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas (home of one of the nation’s busiest maternity wards) were illegal aliens. The Left’s efforts to deny that there’s anything at all wrong with conferring citizenship on the children of illegal aliens makes it hard for them to mount any serious argument to keep the current practice. If they’re serious about wanting to preserve birthright citizenship, then they’d better start getting serious about immigration enforcement — because the longer they obstruct efforts at genuinely curbing illegal immigration, the more likely it becomes that the public will throw up its hands and demand a change in our citizenship practices.
