If you were a novelist writing a political thriller set in Washington, and you decided to create a character who was an African leader seeking a meeting in the Oval Office, and you named this character “President Bongo,” you would risk being called a racist.

Today, in the NYT, there is a story about the chief executive of Gabon meeting Bush in the White House last year. His name? President Bongo.
