Your Government At Work

Unlike most conservatives, I think the Census Bureau does a pretty good job, considering (full disclosure: my Center has a contract with them — though it’s not for PR!). But given the nature of their work, they’re going to get sucked into identity politics a lot, and two press releases today highlight that: First, a collection of facts marking “Unmarried and Single Americans Week” — it used to be called National Singles Week but was changed as “an acknowledgment that many unmarried Americans do not identify with the word ’single’ because they are parents, have partners or are widowed.” I am not making this up. Even worse, La Oficina del Censo is now conducting a test to see if the census forms in 2010 should be bilingual.
