Senate GOP Whip Jon Kyl (Ariz.) on Tuesday said he supports the idea of allowing states to decide whether to opt in to a publicly run health plan.
Kyl told The Hill he remains opposed to the Senate Democrats’ plan, which is being scored by the Congressional Budget Office. The bill would establish the option in states but allow them to opt out.
If true, that would be big news. But that’s not what the senator said, according to Kyl’s office:
Today’s report in The Hill regarding Senator Kyl’s position on an “opt-in” for a government insurance plan is inaccurate. His statement was taken completely out of context, and he, along with every member of our caucus, does not support a government-run insurance plan in any form. Everyone who has been following this debate should know Senator Kyl has been leading the charge against a government takeover of our health-care system.
