President Barack Obama once famously justified his tendency toward unilateralism with two words: “I won.”
Well. Some of us suggested at the time that Democrats might come to regret that line of argument, though I had in mind a President Cruz rather than a President Trump.
Mitch McConnell had an “I won” moment of his own in response, when he vowed that Republicans would not vote to confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court.
If things go the way it looks like they’re going tonight, Obama’s high-handedness is going to look foolish, and McConnell’s response wise.
“Elections have consequences!” they say.
