Unpopular Former President to Vote for Unpopular Presidential Candidate

Former president Jimmy Carter said Monday that Hillary Clinton is “quite unpopular,” although he will still be supporting her in November.

“It’s been an exciting and unprecedented kind of campaign this year, and unfortunately, the way it’s turned out, both choices in the major parties are quite unpopular,” Carter said. “But I don’t have any doubt that one of the candidates is better qualified than the other.”

Both Clinton and Trump are heading into the general election with high unfavorable ratings — Clinton with 53.5 percent and Trump with 62.7 percent, according to Real Clear Politics. Clinton’s unfavorable ratings have continued to rise since she announced her bid for the presidency in April 2015. Then, her unfavorable was 46.3 percent, and in the past year it’s been as high as 56 percent.

Carter was an unpopular president by the end of his one-term, losing to Ronald Reagan in a landslide in 1980.

In April 2014, Carter criticized Clinton for taking “very little action” during her time at the State Department to bring about peace.

Yet, Carter has made up his mind this election: “Everybody knows I’m Democratic, and I’ll be voting Democratic.”
