Mandatory Abortion For Population Control?

Dan Savage, the world famous cultural leftist, says he believes there should be mandatory abortion to reduce human population. From the CNS story:

Near the program’s end, a woman from the audience asked, “Which so-called dangerous idea do you each think would have the greatest potential to change the world for the better if it were implemented?”

Savage said, “Population control. There’s too many god—- people on the planet! And I don’t know if that’s a – you know, I’m pro-choice. I believe that women should have the right to control their bodies. Sometimes in my darker moments I’m anti-choice.” “I think abortion should be mandatory for about 30 years,” he said. “That’s a dangerous idea. She wanted a dangerous idea. So throw a chair at me.”

I hear you, dear readers, saying to yourselves: “So, a radical says something radical? What’s the big deal?”

Ah, but it isn’t just him. Some very mainstream environmentalists and members of the intelligentsia have extolled China’s “one child policy”–the heart of which imposes mandatory abortion on women pregnant with a second child.

Moreover, population reduction–of the kind pushed by Sir David Attenboroughwould require such a tyrannical policy. More Draconian, in fact , given that China has only slowed the rate of its population growth, not reduced actual numbers.

Besides, Savage isn’t all that radical any more in today’s society. And his call for mandatory abortion is not that far out of the mainstream.
