Here’s a case in point. A friend of mine who is quite conservative recently wrote what I thought was a very thought-provoking review of Jonah Goldberg’s latest book, provocatively titled Liberal Fascism. I passed it along to my extensive email list of Democrats: “The following book review by Dr. Laina Farhat-Holzman is food for thought. She doesn’t wholeheartedly agree with the author, and I don’t wholeheartedly agree with her, but her review is a good read, and I’m looking forward to reading the book.” From the shrill, outraged responses I received, one would have thought that I had blasphemed against the gods, except for the fact that we all know that progressives are godless. And for those few God-fearing progressives, God forbid that we should read a book with which we might disagree! Rather, we should burn it! Sounds like liberal fascism to me. All the more reason for me to read Goldberg’s book.
