Of Alexander’s, where we stood
Man or robot — you had to guess
Whether he broke breath or not:
Meticulous in evening dress.
Eyes fixed as in a painted doll;
Hypnotically he cast his spell
Reflected in the trolley flash
Under thunder of the EL.
