The Amazing Disappearing Tax Pledge

As the president makes noises about breaking his super-duper campaign promise, it’s important to note that his rhetoric isn’t exactly a major departure from the hints his own administration and party have been dropping for months. See:Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, David Axelrod, and Nancy Pelosi.

In each case, these trial balloons quickly popped, forcing the White House to walk back the tax-hike language.  If the president is truly committed to upholding his airtight campaign promise (admitted, one that he’s already broken), it seems odd that his own people repeatedly float proposals that utterly destroy it.  Now that the president himself has joined the party, one fears that the epic expiration of this uber-promise isn’t too far off.
