A reader notes this brief civics lesson from an Associated Press story:
The government’s job is to collect taxpayer dollars and decide how to spend them.
So that’s government’s job? Thanks, AP! For some reason, I had this in mind:
… in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish ….
Too bad we didn’t have AP geniuses around then. King George was collecting taxpayer dollars and deciding how to spend them — we could have spared ourselves a war if only we’d known the true purpose of government.
