Not long ago the Polish plumber was the smiling symbol of Euro-integration. Now it’s the Polish sports reporter:
The Sun has been hiring journalists from Poland as it gears up to run a Polish edition during the Euro 2008 football tournament.
Jeff Webster, who is responsible for putting together the Sun’s Polish edition for Euro 2008, which starts on Saturday, confirmed that the paper was bringing in some journalists from Poland to contribute to its coverage.
“Apart from ongoing news and material from the English version the paper will be publishing extra copy on the Polish team – interviews and analysis,” Webster told Polish daily Metro on Friday.
You can read the politics and business pages of any British newspaper and not be overwhelmed by any sense of foreignness, but turn to the sports — cricket, “football,” &c., — and it’s like reading the Mars Times.
