Blast from the Marxist Past

I love India’s Economic Times because it is one of the world’s great newspapers and because it takes the time to remind us that, in some places, museum-quality specimens of the species Homo marxistus still roam the Earth. Savor this vintage Marxist drivel:

NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister [Manmohan Singh] is being given a dose of the Marxists’ theory of capitalism. The CPM has dubbed his appeals to the industry as meaningless and empty rhetoric saying that “asking capitalism to cease exploitation is like asking for the moon”.
… “A capitalist is a capitalist because he exploits. A capitalist does not exploit because he cheats the workers in the labour market or because he is immoral. He may be both, but even when he is neither, he will still exploit. Exploitation under capitalism is inherent in its production process itself due to the basic law on which it operates; at any point of time, the value commanded by labour in the market is always less than the value of what is produced by this labour.”

I can only imagine Dr. Manmohan Singh, an Oxford-educated economist and the architect of India’s economic miracle, listening patiently to this Marxian bilge about ”surplus value.” Dr. Singh has helped make a nation of one billion souls materially better off and kept the peace with Pakistan. How many people have done as much tangible good for the world?
