Basically, Schultz started a Tuesday segment on racist attitudes toward President Obama and then, to prove his point, ran a clip from Gov. Rick Perry edited to make him sound like a racist. Here’s what Perry actually said:
“. . .that big, black cloud that hangs over America, that debt that is so monstrous. . .”
Schultz edited the above to end with “America,” and then he comes out with this howler:
“That black cloud Perry is talking about is President Barack Obama.”
Schultz and his guest then go on to discuss the racist implications of the “black cloud.”
Caught red handed, Schultz “apologized” last night:
“Last night we played a clip of Governor Perry talking about the debt being a ‘big black cloud’ over this country,” he said. “We did not present the full context of those statements and we should’ve [shown the full Perry video clip] no doubt about it, it was a mistake and we regret the error. On this particular statement, we should not have included it in our coverage of his overheated rhetoric. That’s our mistake. The full context of all of these other statements show who he is and what he stands for.”
What bull. The segment wasn’t about overheated rhetoric, it was that Perry was a racist. Schultz never apologized for that. No way is this apology appropriate.
Perry’s been in the race for a few days now and we have Maddow lying about the governor wanting to lynch Ben Bernanke, we have Ed Schultz calling him a racist and we have Chris Matthews calling him “Bull Connor” with a smile. What a trio of sad-sack lying hacks MSNBC has chosen for their political coverage.
