Every time I think the exchanges in the White House briefing room can’t get any more idiotic, the press corps find a way to prove me wrong. Yesterday the New York Sun reported that Bush authorized the disclosure of some parts of the NIE to reporters in the summer of 2003. Needless to say, the White House press corps immediately started pushing the story that Bush is a hypocrite, because he’s said before that he doesn’t approve of leaks.
Is it really the case that they can’t see the difference between an authorized disclosure of classified information and an unauthorized leak? Of course not. They’re not stupid — just disingenuous.
