A Newspaper Event Off-Limits to the Press?

Greg’s post really jumps out at me as outrageous: A newspaper publishers’ group is holding a reception to honor its “Newsmakers of the Year,” and the event is off limits to newspaper reporters? Even given the fact that almost every publisher I know hates reporters, that is too weird. I just sent an email to the chairman of the publishers’ group to inquire about this:

I wonder if it strikes you as odd that an event hosted by newspaper publishers to honor the “newsmaker of the year” should be off-limits to the press?  Was that a condition put forward by the White House? And, if so, why would you agree to it?
