Newspapers’ Biggest Challenge: Managing Online Growth

Joe Strupp, senior editor at newspaper industry trade publication Editor & Publisher, writes that the top industry story of 2006 is “online growth, both for and against newspapers.” He writes, “nearly every paper saw their online audience surpass their print readers.”

The problem for newspapers, he says (and I agree), will be determining “how to make more money on the web and whether to charge readers.” Those are tough questions without easy answers, and until the newspapers solve them they will continue to hemorrhage money and print subscribers.
