First up there is Dwayne Wade’s nephew in Chicago, who is recovering from a gunshot wound during a gang-involved shooting at a convenience store:
Wade’s nephew was one of six males shot at a store on Chicago’s South Side about 6 p.m. Thursday by hooded men who police said fled the scene in an SUV. One man was dead at the scene and four others — ranging in age from 16 to 24 — were hospitalized in critical condition. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the slain man as Shawndell Harris, 22.
The Wade family has not released their injured relative’s name, nor has Chicago police. The eight-time NBA All-Star said his Wade’s World Foundation has made curbing violence, particularly gun violence, a top priority for several years.
Wade, who wore a hoodie along with his Miami Heat teammates to protest Trayvon Martin’s death has yet to comment on the “hooded men” who fled the scene.
And then there was the big rally for Trayvon here in Miami with Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and various celebrities:
As more than 1,000 people flocked to Miami’s Bayfront Park Sunday under a blazing sun, Trayvon Martin’s hometown rolled out the most elaborate and spirited rally yet calling for justice for the slain teenager.
A James Brown impersonator incorporating Trayvon’s name into a rendition of Living in America. Soul singer Betty Wright, cheered on by fellow crooner Chaka Khan, belted out rousing gospel song. Former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning joined the animated scene on stage at the park’s amphitheater.
Even Miami-Dade County’s one-time top cop, the retired and usually reserved Police Director Bobby Parker, took to the podium to blast the Sanford Police Department’s investigation into neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, who he said “has a dark heart.”
“This is the time to become energized,” Parker shouted. “This is the time to take action. Trayvon Martin gave his life for this cause!”
And again, Sharpton, Jackson, Parker et al. were silent on the gun violence that struck Miami the night before their Trayvon rally. Why do these other deaths no matter as much? “Grandma, I’ve Been Shot” Said Girl Hurt In Gang Related Mass Shooting:
Fourteen people have been shot and two are dead in what may be one of the worst mass shootings in South Florida history.
The shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. outside the Funeraria Latina Emanuel funeral home at 14990 W. Dixie Highway Friday night.
One of the victims, a 43-year-old man, died outside the funeral home, authorities said. The other, a 27-year-old man, died at the hospital. Witnesses at the funeral home had said one of the two people killed was shot in the chest. Their names have not been released.
