Novak on the Press

This comment from Novak’s column jumped out at me:

The FBI soon asked to interview me, prompting my first major decision. My attorneys advised me that I had no certain constitutional basis to refuse cooperation if subpoenaed by a grand jury. To do so would make me subject to imprisonment and inevitably result in court decisions that would diminish press freedom, all at heavy personal legal costs.

No news organization was less cooperative than the New York Times — pushing it all the way to a lengthy stay in jail for one of its reporters before finally caving. Is there any doubt remaining that the NYT’s conflict throughout the Plame investigation was nothing short of disgraceful, and that the press is worse for it?
