Michelle Obama clearly demonstrated she has better speechmaking technique than Nancy Pelosi, even if you started to choke on all the talk of Michelle forgoing the big bucks for public service. (Ahem: since her husband was elected to the Senate, she’s been making over 300 grand at her job.)
No one was reminding viewers of the flowing fountain of Obama riches on PBS. When Jim Lehrer tried to wrap up the night with PBS’s panel of historians, they were uniformly gooey, like Paula Abdul on “Idol.” Peniel Joseph of Brandeis compared Michelle to Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Shirley Chisholm. Richard Norton Smith (the putative Republican) said those Obama daughters were so cute they were worth two million extra votes. Michael Beschloss said it was more like four million added votes.
