Random Thoughts on the Execution of Humberto Leal

One major fact that President Obama, the Mexican government, and other critics of the execution of Leal — an illegal immigrant convicted of kidnapping, raping, and murdering a 16-year-old girl — ignore is that for U.S. law enforcement to properly comply with the Vienna Convention, it is necessary to determine the immigration status of a suspect as early in the investigation as possible. Am I wrong here? And whenever a state tries to pass just such a bill, the Left goes wacko.

Hey, I’m all for foreign nationals having access to their consular representatives, but I guess Mexico only wants this privilege to apply to media-driven capital-murder cases.

As for the argument that our relations with Mexico will be strained over this, yeah, I’ll lose a lot of sleep on that one. I guess President Obama’s plan to arm Mexican drug cartels with U.S. weapons might hit a snag. So tragic.

And to be lectured on human rights by Mexico at this time is also beyond comprehension. Clean up your own house first and then we’ll talk.
