R.C. Hoiles

I mentioned that the Orange County Register is one of my favorite newspapers, and a big part of that is my admiration for R.C. Hoiles, who founded the company. Hoiles was the original curmudgeonly newspaper publisher, libertarian to the point of anarchism, and honest: When he was arrested for disregarding several of California’s traffic laws, he allowed the reports of his arrest to appear on the front page of his papers. He was fined by The Man and threatened with jail for violating FDR’s wage and price controls–he gave his employees an illegal raise. My experience is that one usually has to threaten to do something illegal to a publisher to get a raise, but those were better days.
