Shouldn’t The Press Have Reported This?

ABCNews.com has a story up today on Senator McCain finally accepting a Secret Service detail. This excerpt jumped out:

Journalists accompanying McCain’s campaign have long known that the senator was not protected but declined to report it publicly out of a concern that disclosure might inspire would-be assailants.

This seems newsworthy and should have been reported earlier. It also creates the impression that the press following McCain was tailoring its coverage to stay in the senator’s good graces.
