So these are the issues that readers of really serious newspapers care about… Each morning I get e-mailed various papers’ “most read” stories. And here are today’s “most read” stories from the websites of two of Britain’s most intellectual newspapers.
* The Guardian: Why does Hillary Clinton wear such bad clothes? (This story has been The Guardian’s “most read” story three days in succession now. For the record, I think Hillary has been dressing rather stylishly lately.)
* The Daily Telegraph: Heather Mills torn to shreds by Sir Paul McCartney divorce judge. Followed by: Heather Mills is only fooling herself.
* And The Times of London (business section!) provides us with “before” and “after” photos of Sir Paul’s lawyer after the former Lady McCartney threw a glass of water over her head in court yesterday:
One can only feel for the small child the couple share. Her childhood is likely to be a “long and winding road” where she might be singing “Can’t buy me love” with rather more sadness than her father did.
At least Guardian readers don’t appear to be taking too much interest in the yet more phony statistics about the Iraq war dead that The Guardian is highlighting today (also linked to in a big red box at the top of the paper’s home page).
(Of course, the serious British papers are no match for The New York Post, one of whose headlines yesterday was: Love Gov’s boy toy bares three-ways with wife.)
