BBC World Service newsreaders have taken to using the phrase “the daily carnage” routinely in doing their half-hourly part in promoting the insurgency’s hyperbolic propaganda. The Daily Carnage has no comics, of course–but no horoscope either, since everybody knows that no matter what your sign is, in Baghdad, there’s nothing but more death and destruction in the stars and on the street. Obituaries seem to be the most popular feature.
Will the Daily Carnage go under if we pull out of Iraq? Not according to Richard Perle, writing in the Guardian a few weeks ago. If we pull out, he says, the Carnage will only be “even worse that what we are seeing now.” Worse? Like the Hourly Carnage?
