Department of Labor data shows that the number of Americans leaving their jobs for better opportunities is increasing, according to a Bloomberg report.

About 3.56 million people left their jobs in May, the highest number since 2000 and up from 3.35 million in April. The number of workers voluntarily leaving their jobs generally rises when the economy is strong, as a greater number of more desirable opportunities become available. A total of 6.64 million jobs were available in May, down slightly from 6.84 million in April.

President Trump has consistently taken credit for the booming economy.

“When I signed the tax cut, six weeks ago, it set off a tidal wave of good news that continues to grow every single day. Before the ink was dry, companies were announcing thousands and thousands of new jobs and enormous investments to their workers,” Trump said in February.

The White House has since repeatedly cited tax cuts and regulatory reforms as a big reason for the health of the economy, though some economists worry that another recession may be on the way, especially in the wake of Trump’s tariffs on China and the European Union, who have both hit back with reciprocal tariffs, sparking fears of a trade war.
