Comedian Bill Maher said on Friday’s episode of his HBO show Real Time that he has no problem with the country sinking into an economic recession if it is detrimental to President Trump.
“By the way, I’m hoping for it because one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So please, bring on the recession,” Maher said. “Sorry if that hurts people but it’s either root for a recession or you lose your democracy….I feel like the bottom has to fall out at some point.”
The backlash on Twitter was swift, even from some who said they also dislike the president. Many users pointed out that Maher would not be profoundly affected by a recession given his net worth of about $100 million and reported salary of $10 million.
@billmaher I understand you want to get rid of trump. So do I, We are on the same side but you don’t have to make it public that you wish the economy to crash. You are making us look bad. C’mon man

The Left would rather see America fail, than Trump succeed. The Left gets upset when they see America succeed. Remember that.

I am praying for and have confidence in Pres. Trump as Korea negotiations begin. I think most Americans feel the same. Whatever happens ,the hatred of the left from DeNiro’s F—-k
Trump to Bill Maher hoping for an economic collapse in US is a new low, even for them. Disgusting.— Gary L Bauer (@GaryLBauer) June 11, 2018
The comedian’s latest comment was his “cruelest and most ill-informed comment yet,” wrote former attorney and radio host Dean Obeidallah.
Maher has made no secret of his scorn for Trump.
“The only way that Trump survives as president is if we become not a nation of laws — in essence, a fascist dictatorship,” he said earlier this year.
