In his emotional opening statement before the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday, Judge Brett Kavanaugh lamented the effect that multiple allegations of sexual assault have had on his and his family’s reputation.
“My family and my name have been totally and permanently destroyed by vicious and false accusations,” Kavanaugh said in his opening statement.
Kavanaugh, who has thus far been accused by three women of sexual misconduct, went on to malign Senate Democrats for contributing to a toxic political environment, which he believes allowed the false allegations against him to gain traction. He specifically cited Senator Cory Booker’s charge that he was an “evil” man and anyone who supported him was “complicit in evil.”
Kavanaugh went on to describe the negative effects he believes the accusations will have on the country for decades to come.
“The consequences will extend long past my nomination. The consequences will be with us for decades. This grotesque and coordinated assassination will dissuade competent and good people of all political persuasions from serving our country,” he said.
