Tyler Robinson, the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk, was living with his transgender romantic partner in the leadup to the assassination, Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed to CNN.
The roommate was “a male transitioning to female,” Cox said, noting that “this partner has been incredibly cooperative, had no idea this was happening, and is working with investigators right now.”
The individual is currently not accused of any criminal activity, the FBI told Fox News.
Kirk was assassinated on Wednesday during his Utah Valley State University stop on his “American Comeback” tour, just moments after an audience member asked a question about transgender shooters.
“Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last ten years?” Hunter Kozak, an attendee, asked, according to the New York Post.
Kirk responded, “Too many.”
“Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last ten years?” Kozak asked.
“Counting or not counting gang violence?” Kirk responded. Moments later, he was fatally shot in the neck.
While officials have not yet released the name of the roommate, public records show that Lance Twiggs, a 22-year-old, reportedly in the process of transitioning from male to female, lives at the same address as Robinson. The Post reported that a family member of Twiggs confirmed they were living together.
Cox told the Wall Street Journal that the suspect was “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.”
In a Friday press conference, the governor revealed that one of Robinson’s family members told investigators that he had become more political in recent years, even discussing specifically why he disagreed with Kirk before the fatal attack.
“They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had,” Cox said. Utah state records indicate that Robinson was registered to vote, but not affiliated with a specific party.
An FBI spokesperson said Friday that they are still trying to piece together what motivated Robinson.
