President Trump on Thursday demanded again that Congress pass immigration reform, an issue that has followed him relentlessly this month and led him to make conflicting recommendations.

Trump’s exhortation comes only weeks after he told Republican lawmakers to “stop wasting their time” trying to pass immigration reform before the midterm elections, because, he claimed, Democrats are “just playing games” and will not support a fix until then. The House failed to pass two separate immigration bills — a conservative one and a ‘compromise’ between moderates and hardliners in the GOP caucus — late last month, as Democrats stuck together in voting against the measures while Republican dissenters joined them. Neither bill was thought likely to pass the Senate.
The president also reiterated a stance he first staked out last month, again calling for the U.S. to dispense with “long and costly trial[s]” for illegal immigrants and instead deport them right away.
“Tell the people ‘OUT,’ and they must leave, just as they would if they were standing on your front lawn,” he wrote.
