Giuliani Expected to Testify Before January 6 Committee: Report

Rudy Giuliani is expected to testify before the House Select Committee on the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot next month, sources told CNN.

The former mayor of New York, who later served as former President Trump’s personal lawyer, was initially scheduled to appear before the committee in February, but his deposition was rescheduled. Giuliani has been negotiating with lawmakers over the scope of the committee’s subpoena against him, with his lawyer previously stating he does not want to waive executive or attorney-client privilege.

The committee subpoena claims Giuliani “actively promoted claims of election fraud on behalf of the former President and sought to convince state legislators to take steps to overturn the election results.”

Giuliani was active in pushing unfounded claims by the former president that the results of the 2020 election were fraudulent. On November 30, 2020, for example, Giuliani urged Arizona Republican legislators to appoint pro-Trump electors despite Biden winning the state’s popular vote, saying “In history, I swear to God, you will be heroes….If you can’t make a determination, then don’t certify.”

The New York Supreme Court suspended Giuliani’s law license in the state in June 2021, citing his claims of election fraud.

“These false statements were made to improperly bolster respondent’s narrative that due to widespread voter fraud, victory in the 2020 United States presidential election was stolen from his client. We conclude that respondent’s conduct immediately threatens the public interest and warrants interim suspension from the practice of law,” the court said at the time.

Giuliani’s expected appearance comes after Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner, both of whom held prominent roles in the White House, testified before the panel.
