In the wake of Donald Trump’s announcement that he is being indicted over his alleged mishandling of classified documents, Hillary Clinton trolled the former president, promoting her merchandise that pokes fun at Republican outcry over her own classified email scandal.

“Bringing this back in light of recent news,” the former 2016 Democratic presidential nominee tweeted Friday morning “Get a limited-edition But Her Emails hat and support @onwardtogether groups working to strengthen our democracy.”

On Thursday, Trump announced that special counsel Jack Smith informed his legal team that he had been indicted in a classified-documents investigation, making him the first former U.S. president to face federal criminal charges. This probe is separate from the state-level one spearheaded by progressive Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg, who indicted Trump over alleged hush-money payments sent to a porn performer prior to the 2016 election.

Clinton launched her parody-like special edition hats embroidered with the words, “But Her Emails” on Onward Together PAC’s sales page in 2022. The phrase was meant as a joke nodding at Democratic grievances about Trump’s harping on Clinton’s use of a private email server to do government business while she served as secretary of state.

Eleven days out from the election, the FBI announced it was probing newly discovered emails sent or received by Clinton, only to decline to charge her with violating federal records-keeping requirements two days before the election. The new messages were found on former Democratic representative Anthony Weiner’s computer. The incident caused a media firestorm that some Democrats believe cost Clinton significant support, and may have cost her the election.

Senator Ted Cruz dissed Clinton for unveiling the “But Her Emails” hats in February 2022, tweeting, “This is just sad,” over Clinton’s post featuring her wearing it. Clinton did a sale blast last year for the hats after the New York Times reported that Trump had flushed documents down the toilet in the White House while president.

While the official indictment against Trump has not yet been unsealed, he said that he has been summoned to appear at the federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Multiple outlets reported that the indictment includes seven counts. Trump’s attorney Jim Trusty told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins: “They basically break out from an Espionage Act charge … several obstruction based-type charges and false statement charges.” A retention charge and conspiracy charge are also included in the indictment, he said.

Trump has since parted ways with Trusty.
