Hollywood City Council Votes to Remove Trump’s Walk of Fame Star Over ‘His Disturbing Treatment of Women’

The West Hollywood city council voted unanimously Monday evening in favor of urging the Los Angeles City Council and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to permanently remove president Trump’s star from the Walk of Fame.

“The City Council will consider adopting a resolution urging the Los Angeles City Council and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove President Donald J. Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, due to his disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country,” read the agenda item voted on Monday night, which was obtained by the Hollywood Reporter.

The star, unveiled in 2007 to commemorate Trump’s production of the Miss Universe pageant, has been the repeated target of vandalism and the site of multiple violent confrontations between Trump supporters and protesters. Most recently, a 24-year-old man destroyed the star with a pick axe late last month and was subsequently charged with felony vandalism.

A staff report accompanying the resolution listed a number of additional factors the panel considered in voting to remove the star, including, “the separation of children from their parents at the United States border; Denial of findings from the United States intelligence community regarding Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election, and the continued refusal to hold Russia accountable for its crimes; Denial of the impacts of climate change on the world, and the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement; His treatment of transgender individuals, including his reversal of an Obama administration era policy to allow transgender individuals to serve in the military; Plans to divert funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program to cover the cost of child detainment tied to its ‘zero tolerance’ immigration policy.”

The unanimous vote does not guarantee the star’s removal. In 2015, the Hollywood chamber of commerce refused to heed calls for the removal of disgraced comedian Bill Cosby’s star, citing a policy that prevents the body from responding to public backlash.

“The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a registered historic landmark. Once a star has been added to the Walk, it is considered a part of the historic fabric of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Because of this, we have never removed a star from the Walk,” chamber of commerce president and CEO Leron Gubler emailed the Hollywood Reporter at the time.
