The Iranian regime issued a bold threat to the U.S. on Wednesday, predicting that American leaders will face the same fate as overthrown and executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein if they use force against Tehran.

“The American leaders…have got this message that if they attack Iran, they will encounter a fate similar to that of Saddam Hussein,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement.

Iran’s Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has mocked President Trump as a “newcomer,” concurred. “There is no doubt that the Americans will be defeated …provided Iranian officials fully perform their duties,” he said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had strong words for the Iran in a speech on Monday, signalling a tougher stance toward the regime after the president pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal earlier this month.

“Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East,” Pompeo said. “We will ensure freedom of navigation on the waters in the region. We will work to prevent and counteract any Iranian malign cyber activity. We will track down Iranian operatives and their Hezbollah proxies operating around the world and crush them.”

After pulling out of the nuclear deal, the U.S. is preparing to impose “the strongest sanctions in history” on Iran, and military action remains on the table should the state sponsor of terrorism restart its nuclear program, Pompeo added.
