White House chief of staff John Kelly is expected to retire this summer and President Trump has already begun meeting with advisers to determine his replacement, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The exact date of Kelly’s departure has not yet been set, but sources close to him told the Journal that he may depart as early as this week or possibly after Trump’s meetings with NATO allies in Europe next month. Kelly has reportedly indicated in the past that he would only like to serve in his role for one year, and July 31 would mark his one-year anniversary in the job.
Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, is reportedly being considered to replace Kelly, along with Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney.
