Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their first child in the spring, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced on Monday.

The royal couple touched down in Sydney, Australia, on Monday and made the announcement just a few hours into their tour of the country.

Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal family were told the news on Friday at the wedding of Princess Eugenie to Jack Brooksbank at Windsor Castle, according to reports.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” Kensington Palace confirmed on Twitter amid speculation after Markle wore a large coat to Friday’s wedding.

“Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public,” the palace said in a statement. “The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted for the couple and were able to congratulate them on Friday at the wedding in person.”

Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, “is very happy about this lovely news and she looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild,” the statement continued.

The announcement from Markle, 37, and Harry, 34, comes just a few months after their May wedding at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, which drew a worldwide audience.

“I can’t wait to start a family, but in due time,” Markle said in a 2016 interview.

“You know, I think one step at a time, and hopefully we’ll start a family in the near future,” Harry agreed in their engagement interview.

The new royal baby will be seventh in line to the throne. The couple plans to work on youth leadership projects on their tour but will visit the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach as well.
