Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi was admitted to a hospital in Luxembourg for evaluation on Friday after she sustained an injury during a trip to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, her office said in a statement.
A spokesman for the 84-year-old lawmaker said she “sustained an injury during an official engagement,” but did not offer additional information about the injuries.
A person familiar with the incident told the Wall Street Journal Pelosi tripped and fell after a group photo with other lawmakers and officials.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals. She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,” the statement added.
Pelosi was one of 18 lawmakers who embarked on the trip to Belgium and Luxembourg to commemorate the World War II battle. The bipartisan delegation, led by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, is scheduled to take part in events on Friday and Saturday “along with veterans and their families, active duty servicemembers, government and military officials and foreign dignitaries,” Pelosi’s office said before the trip.
She “was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II—including her uncle, Johnny,” her office said. “She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
Pelosi, who was the first woman to serve as House speaker, stepped down from Democratic leadership after the party lost the House majority in 2022.
The incident comes days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) fell at the Capitol. McConnell, 82, suffered a sprained wrist and cuts to his face.
