The special counsel investigating former president Donald Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election has subpoenaed former vice president Mike Pence, according to several reports.

Special counsel Jack Smith is seeking documents and testimony related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, CNN reported. Smith’s office wants Pence to testify about his interactions with the former president ahead of the 2020 election and on January 6.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith in November to oversee the investigation into the alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents.

The subpoena comes after months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence’s legal team, according to ABC News, which first reported on the subpoena.
