Planned Parenthood has pulled a profanity-laced ad from YouTube after it was not well-received among people outside its target audience of young New Yorkers.
The ad, called “Protect our freedom to f**k,” features the uncensored f-word 19 times in its 45-second duration. Actors including a drag queen, several young people, a lady in a bra at a laundromat, and an old man playing chess repeat the f-word to the camera.
“Protect our right to safely f**k whoever the f**k we want. Donate to Planned Parenthood of New York City,” the video concludes.
After many social-media users complained, Planned Parenthood took down the ad from YouTube on Friday night, but it remains elsewhere on the internet.
(Warning: Graphic language.)
The ad was intended to appeal to the “younger generation more empowered than ever and hopefully willing to help,” Gerard Caputo, CEO of BBH NY CCO, which was behind it, told AdWeek. “It all starts with the courage to do something different and we believe we have already succeeded.”
The mammoth abortion provider has sounded the alarm against Congress and the Trump administration, which have threatened to cut the $500 million in taxpayer funding the organization gets each year. Its New York branch has endorsed Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo for reelection this year.
“Now more than ever we need experienced leaders who understand the importance of protecting access to abortion in New York state,” a spokesman for Planned Parenthood of New York told the New York Post.
Planned Parenthood supporters have come up with other obscenity-ridden ideas to get their message across, including a button with a similar message to the controversial ad. The sales page states that proceeds from sales of the button go directly to Planned Parenthood.
“Reproductive health and rights are under attack like never before,” reads a message on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund website, adding that Congress and the Trump administration have an “extreme agenda” and are “seizing every opportunity to roll back reproductive rights and cut Planned Parenthood patients off from care.”
