President Trump spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday and offered his second defense this week of the sanctity of unborn life.

“All children, born and unborn, are made in the holy image of God. Every life is sacred and every soul is a precious gift from heaven,” the president told the religious leaders and others gathered at the annual event, hosted by members of Congress and the Fellowship Foundation. “I will never let you down. I can say that. Never.”

The abortion-rights group NARAL immediately released a statement saying that Trump “can’t seem to stop talking about abortion” and that he is simply “throwing red meat to his shrinking political base in hopes of political survival.”

Trump’s comments echoed his remarks during the State of the Union address on Tuesday, in which he condemned several late-term-abortion bills that have passed in New York, Virginia, and other states and called on Congress to pass the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

“There could be no greater contrast to the beautiful image of a mother holding her infant child than the chilling displays our nation saw in recent days,” the president told the joint session of Congress. “To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother’s womb.”
