FACELESS DREAMS FULL OF NUMBERS

Every now and then for a few days
The same dream presents a problem that can’t
Quite be solved or sent away. It comes
Like the dawn breeze, something to be counted
Or explained but you never quite know how
Or why. A house in University City –
Who lives in it? A group of students ask
What book should be read? But the questions
Are never as clear as these. You get
The first half but not the second, the house
And the students but no words, no voice
And above all never a face.
         It comes back
Until you recognize it for a dream
And it dissolves in the face of reality.
