When you’re facing an estimated $1.4 billion state budget shortfall, does fighting “insensitive” language on campus qualify as a pressing priority for a public institution? If you are an official at the University of Maryland, the answer is yes. UMD spent $15,000 this year on a program to encourage students to avoid “non-inclusive language,” according to higher-ed watchdog group Campus Reform.
According to the university, troublesome phrases such as “illegal alien” and “that’s so ghetto” can make some people feel “uncomfortable.”
