Absenteeism — why?

Here’s a piece on Inside Higher Ed discussing the high degree of absenteeism among college students.
The first comment nails it: Most students have been taught that what matters is certification, not education. If the credential itself is what is sought rather than knowledge, it makes perfectly good sense to try to get it with the minimum amount of effort.
