On American Thinker, Robert Weissberg has a terrific piece in which he responds to a recent, effusive Washington Post story about the strides Towson State has made at closing the “graduation gap.” His argument is that it isn’t so hard to equalize graduation rates if you make it easy for weak minority students to stay in school and pile up credits in simplified courses. College administrators can brag about their “success” in supposedly making society more equitable — but what has all that pseudo-education done for the students?
The mania for “producing” college degrees is reminiscent of the old Soviet Union, where managers strove to fulfill quotas without the least regard for quality, since that couldn’t be measured and tonnage could.
