Afghanistan in a More Auspicious Time

Land of the High Flags: Afghanistan When the Going Was Good, Rosanne Klass’s splendid travel memoir describing the country in a more innocent era, has been reissued.
Klass went there in the 1950s to teach English in a school for men and boys from remote villages. She was the first woman to teach male students in the country.
Phyllis Chesler, Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at the City University of New York, reviews the memoir, calling it “an extraordinary gem of a book … that conjures all of the heart-stopping beauty” of this “’crossroads of the world’” and “cursed land.”
