Phi Beta Cons

Alma Mater

In the latest Chronicle Review, Lawrence Biemiller reviews the new book, “Old Main: Fame, Fate, and Contributions to Campus Planning and Design.” The point of the book, Biemiller writes is that, “You cannot overestimate a beloved and iconic campus landmark’s importance to an institution’s sense of itself.”
And how! While it seems as though we spend a lot of time here at PBC criticizing universities, it’s ultimately a labor of love borne out of concern for the higher education system. One of the many important factors keeping us wedded to our respective universities is what the Chronicle’s article calls “institutional heritage.”
As conservatives, belief in heritage and tradition is important. The Chronicle’s article is a pleasant reminder of the aesthetic traditions that help keep those romanticized memories of “Old Main” secured in the mind.
