Another Voice in the “Amethyst” Debate

Collin Levy of the Wall Street Journal contributes this piece taking a positive view of the initiative to lower the drinking age.

As I have been arguing for decades, people tend to overestimate the benefits of governmental policies and to underestimate their costs. I think that is the case here. I doubt that much if any harmful drinking is prevented by the prohibition against drinking by people under the age of 21; on the other hand, by making it illegal, young people are prone to see the illegal act as something of a crossing of the Rubicon. Once you’ve gone over the line, you might as well go all the way.
