Assesssment Rising

For years I’ve advocated the need to provide the public with clear, objective, comparable data about faculty teaching and research productivity. So it’s heartening to note that a new annual index has been created to rank graduate programs.

The quality of this Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, partly funded by the State University of New York at Stony Brook, remains to be thoroughly evaluated; however, as one administrator observes, the emergence of this instrument is a sign that “assessment is in the air, and it isn’t going away.” (Piper Fogg, “A New Standard for Measuring Doctoral Programs,” The Chronicle of Higher Education, January 12)
