The Bad Trade-Off Between Teaching and Research

Inside Higher Ed today has a story about the paper Mark Bauerlein has just written, “Professors on the Production Line, Students on Their Own,” published by AEI. I’m about to read the paper. Mark’s target is the well-known trade-off that colleges and universities get between faculty research and attention to teaching. Mark thinks schools tend too much toward research, and end up with lots of low-quality, unread (sometimes unreadable) faculty writing that keeps professors from devoting much time to their students.

There’s a terrible inefficiency here. I’m eager to see what Mark suggests doing about it.
