Velma Montoya, a former member of the UC Board of Regents, sent me the following e-mail:
The UCLA Chancellor has decided the campus needs a worldclass conference center. So he has decided to build a 9-story hotel with a conference center and two garage levels underground where the current UCLA Faculty Center is located. The Faculty Center would somehow be part of it all — after three years of construction. UCLA cannot even run its boutique, two-story hotel for visiting guests at a profit. So now this. Anyway, does anyone have information about other universities that have tried this approach and the pitfalls they have run into? Any examples you cite will be most appreciated.
